Striker Matty Tymon has said Workington Reds is a good place to be under the club’s new-look management team.

Manager Derek Townsley and his assistants Dave Hewson and Lee Andrews were all involved with the club last season under player-manager Gavin Skelton as Reds finished as runners-up in the Evo-Stik Premier Division.

And Tymon, who was Workington’s top-scorer last season with 15 goals, believes having all three involved again in the management of the team will be good for maintaining last season’s superb team spirit.

Speaking ahead of tomorrow's pre-season match at home to Barrow (3pm ko), Tymon said: “I think they have tried to keep everything the same.

“The spirit in the camp last year was brilliant. They are trying to keep everything the same. It’s a good place to be.”

Tymon, 25, was a key player for Reds last season as they came agonisingly close to winning the league title. The striker always looks to set himself goal-scoring targets for every season but helping make sure the West Cumbrians get off to a good start is his main priority.

“I like to set myself targets that I can achieve,” said the Whitehaven-based player. “But as long as the team starts off well this year that’s the only thing we are looking at. Last year if we had started off well we probably would have won the league.”

Workington have played four pre-season games so far this season, winning two and losing two, and Tymon has felt sharper with every match played.

He said: “It’s going good. Every pre-season is the same – it’s just getting the fitness up. You feel sharper as the games go on.

“I think Barrow will be a very tough game. We have a couple of players out which will make it hard. The main thing is the fitness.”

Workington will be without several key players for tomorrow's match against former Reds manager Darren Edmondson’s Barrow, including Conor Tinnion, Anthony Wright, Scott Allison and Josh Calvert.

Meanwhile, Reds will host an open day at Borough Park from 11am to 5pm on Sunday.

A range of activities have been lined up to keep crowds entertained for the event.

People will have the chance to take part in a question and answer session with chairman Glenn Heathcote and manager Derek Townsley.

Reds’ kit for the new season in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League will also be revealed.

Other activities include a bouncy Castle, fastest shot game, junior and ladies coaching sessions, walking football, a fans match and tombola.

There will also be various refreshments available.
