Workington Reds defender Jake Simpson says his team must avoid another defensive capitulation tonight against Ramsbottom (ko 7.45pm).

Play-off chasing Reds were thumped 5-0 by Stourbridge on Saturday with all five goals coming in the first 27 minutes.

The result saw the Glassboys, who host Northampton in the FA Cup at the weekend, move within a point of Reds.

The Borough Park outfit are turning their attention to tonight's game in the Integro League Cup and are hoping to avoid an upset.

Simpson said: "Nobody who was there or was involved on Saturday would have been happy with what happened.

"We don't want to concede one goal, so to concede five goals in 27 minutes was unacceptable.

"The team takes responsibility for that. If we're not competitive or at the races then you can get turned over."

Opponents Ramsbottom were relegated from the Northern Premier League last season and were knocked out of the FA Trophy by Telford at the weekend.

The Lancashire side currently sit in 16th place in the Northern Premier League First Division North, effectively the eighth tier.

Striker Gareth Seddon is one of their most notable players, having played in the Football League and for Salford City.

Reds will probably have to make do without defender Sam Smith who went off injured after 17 minutes against Stourbridge.

Reds took four points from a possible six off Ramsbottom in the league last season with a 4-0 win at home and a 1-1 away draw.

Simpson added: "I think Ramsbottom will want to prove a point being from a lower league and we're under no illusions.

"They will want to put things right from last season. It will be a tough match and a good opportunity to take our focus off the league.

"We fancy our chances at home."
