Reds boss Lee Andrews vowed to respect the competition by fielding a full-strength side in the Emirates FA Cup first qualifying round this weekend.

Workington travel to face Scarborough Athletic on Saturday and are hoping to eventually get to the first round proper, and Andrews said he and joint-manager Dave Hewson will play the strongest side possible as they try to get through.

Sam Smith is a doubt after being withdrawn at half-time as a precaution during Monday’s game against Whitby Town, but other than that, Andrews does not expect to make sweeping changes.

He said: “It is definitely a game where we will be looking to play a full-strength side. We’ve stopped the run of defeats but we want to turn those draws into wins now.

“We’ve said all along that winning games gets you into good habits, whether that’s in the league or cup. Hopefully, we can get into the first round proper and that gives us the chance to make some money.

“Scarborough are a strong team and they beat Clitheroe 4-0 away on Monday so they’re no mugs. Their pitch is a 3G surface which will be a bit of a leveller, considering they play on it every week.”

Reflecting on his side’s start to the season, Andrews felt they were unlucky not to have more points on the board.

“We’ve been unfortunate in the last four games really. The opposition goalkeepers have been man-of-the-match,” he added.

“To go 1-0 down on Saturday, but to get back on level terms so quickly, was pleasing.”
