Workington Reds Reserves are hoping to leap up the league tonight if they can secure victory away from home.

They will take on bottom side Darwen in the West Lancashire Football League game, ko 8pm.

And a win could possibly push them up as far as fourth – a huge boost for the young team.

Manager Craig Routledge said they were targeting this match but that the side's main aim was still to bring players through for the first team.

"Darwen have lost all five of their games so far this season and if we win tonight we could jump up to fourth," said Routledge.

"There is a league that is obviously there to win but our main aim is still trying to get lads through into the first team."

The side has had mixed fortunes in their opening games with two wins and three defeats leaving them in eighth place but the league is still very open.

"We've had a bit of a mixed start to the season as we have got to know the players," added Routledge.

"We've kept the squad together that we had left from last season and brought in some young lads who are just 16 and 17 years old.

"Also Calum Henderson and Robbie Hebson have come along from the first team to get some game time with us.

"It's settling down okay now. We were unlucky not to win last week but probably lucky to win the week before."

And he admitted that the job of picking the team is getting harder for him and joint manager Billy Redden as players hit form.

"We have got a good squad and are getting the numbers at training which makes mine and Billy's decisions harder now," he said.

"But we have gone with a team and they know if they play well they will keep their place."
