Workington Reds 1 Hednesford Town 0

It wasn’t a pretty victory for Workington Reds but it was three points nonetheless that saw them continue their move back up the table.

A 1-0 victory over Hednesford Town saw Reds get back-to-back victories for the first time in the season.

But it was hard fought with just a lone volley from Conor Tinnion the difference between the two sides at the final whistle.

The match had none of the finesse on display last Tuesday but instead there was a lot of grit and determination to get the job done.

The skills of goalkeeper Aaran Taylor were called into use on several occasions, especially in a second half where the visitors seemed to have the upper hand.

And the experienced number one definitely saved the day in the dying minutes with a superb save from point-blank range.

The visitors would argue that they deserved something from the game – and perhaps they did – but Reds were not in the mood to capitulate.

The only real shot of note in the opening 10 minutes came from Workington’s Anthony Wright from the edge of the area but it went right at the keeper.

Then, Hednesford had a chance as Checkaine Steele and Danny Glover combined to set the latter loose in the box. But he was well closed down by Dan Wordsworth who manged to block the final shot.

And moments later Glover had another chance right in front of goal but this time it was Josh Calvert who got an important tackle in to save the day.

Reds earned their first corner in the 15th minute and Dave Symington put in a long ball looking for the head of Calvert whose header went wide of the target.

As the game struggled to get into gear, Steele looked to get another ball into the danger area and Symington stuck out a foot to put the ball out for a corner which Reds cleared.

Tom Thorley had a chance just after the half-hour mark which went high but neither side really looked like breaking the deadlock.

The match was lacking in excitement until the 38th minute when Reds finally took the lead. Tinnion received the ball on the right-hand side of the box and unleashed a low volley into the back of the net.

In their desire to hit back straight away, Steele nearly unbalanced Taylor in the Reds goal with a long-range shot that had the keeper pedalling backwards. Taylor slipped but luckily the shot went wide of the mark.

Reds continued to look for another goal to give them some breathing space. Great work from Tinnion saw him feed the ball into the feet of Jordan Holt who had the keeper and defender closing him down buit he put his effort wide.

Hednesford were starting to increase the pressure and Reds found themselves restricted to the odd break out of defence.

James Lawrie saw his shot put out for a corner and Reds had to survive two in succession with Calvert eventually clearing after a goalmouth scramble.

Lawrie looked to have missed a tap in, right at the feet of Taylor as he bombed the ball over the bar from close range but the offside flag was also raised.

Taylor saved Reds’ blushes as he palmed away another close-range effort from Lawrie after a defensive mix-up left him in the clear.

Reds made a couple of substitutions and it seemed to enliven their attack as Sam Smith got in the mix, his shot causing problems for the visiting defence.

James Mutton just got a foot to the ball to tip it over the bar for a corner which fell to the head of Calvert but he put it over the bar.

A free-kick from Lawrie on the edge of the area forced another save from Taylor.

Then, a fantastic ball found Joel in the clear out on the left-hand side and he took on the defence, came into the box and turned but he shot just over the bar and a diving keeper.

Taylor made two late saves. First, he had to come forward again to win the ball from the feet on the on-rushing Danny Glover.

Then, the save of the match as Glover looked to get in a good position and boomed at shot at him but he proved a safe pair of hands once more to help Reds see out the remaining minutes and clinch the win.
