Workington Reds boss Dave Hewson hailed Rob Wilson's super-strike as his side beat Ashton United 1-0 last night.

Wilson's volley from 25 yards out proved the difference between the two sides, with the win propelling Reds up to 11th in the table.

"It was a goal fit to win any match," said a delighted Hewson.

"We are over the moon with the win. I think the lads worked really hard tonight, the workrate was phenomenal all over the park.

"I always say you get the rewards for that and they did tonight."

Reds had chances across the park and could have won by a wider advantage if they could have finished off Ashton.

Hewson added: "Fair play to the lads for getting themselves into positions, it was great football that created the opportunities.

"We've got to be more clinical though and put the game to bed because, at 1-0, you are never safe.

"We defended well, with keeper Aaran Taylor and the back four but it puts them under a lot of pressure, so a second goal I feel would have just killed the game.

"But we held on and got all three points."

Hewson also praised his young bench who have been called in from the reserve side with injuries and departures hitting the first-team squad.

Reds will now welcome Stafford Rangers to Borough Park on Saturday and Hewson expects to field a similar side.

James Earl was hit by a sickness bug ahead of last night's clash and was a late withdrawal but he could be fit to resume at the weekend.

"We're in a nice little run at the moment three good performances and three positive results," added Hewson.

"Confidence is high and we are doing the right things at the moment. There's a good atmosphere in the dressing room.

"Confidence was low at one point when we were not getting the results we wanted but we always believed in the lads and it looks like we are starting to turn the corner."
