Workington Reds boss Dave Hewson admitted he was disappointed not to bring anything back from their trip to Blyth Spartans on Monday.

A second-half hat-trick by Jason Maguire gave Blyth a 3-2 victory after Workington had deservedly led at the break.

Rob Wilson scored the opener on 36 minute with a well-taken finish and it could have been better as James Earl had hit the post.

But the game was turned on its head when Maguire scored two goals inside four minutes at the start of the second half.

Although Scott Allison levelled on 68 minutes it couldn’t lift Reds enough to grab a winner and it was a diving header from Maguire which gave Blyth the win ten minutes from the end.

Reds boss Dave Hewson said: “It was a really good first-half performance. Everybody worked hard, stuck to the game plan and we deserved to be in front. In fact it could have been more.

“But we just switched off at the start of the second half and the two goals that put them level were very poor from our point of view.

“We have conceded poor goals all season and these were the same. We speak about it all the time, about people doing their jobs but we weren’t able to do that.

“It is so disappointing to score two goals at a leading side and finish on the wrong end of the scoreline.

“In many ways it was one of those games where you don’t want half time to come and we just didn’t start again in the same manner.

“But we have another big game against the League leaders (Rushall) on Saturday and we will be ready for that. It will be a different challenge as they offer another sort of test.”

Reds hope to have Joe McGee fit again after he missed out with a foot injury but the game will be too soon for Sam Smith, who is still recovering from an ankle injury.
