Workington Reds defender Kyle May has urged the club's fringe players to grab their opportunity with both hands in the League Cup against Clitheroe tonight (7.45pm ko).

Reds moved up to seventh in the Evo Stik Premier Division with their third win in four games on Saturday, with goals from May and Conor Tinnion securing a comfortable 2-0 victory over league leaders Rushall Olympic.

The experienced centre-back expects bosses David Hewson and Lee Andrews to give a run out to players on the fringes of the starting 11 tonight and hopes they can step up to fill the holes in a thin squad.

Clitheroe have not lost a game since November and have won nine of their 11 matches in that time so will arrive at Borough Park fancying their chances.

He said: "With a small squad we've got to be careful but there'll be opportunities for other people which is good.

"It's a brilliant cup for those lads."

May hopes his side are heading in the right direction after his goal helped topple the Pics at the weekend.

"It was the performance more than anything else which was pleasing after what happened during the week," he said.

"It was a disappointing second half at Blyth after we thought we'd turned a corner so it was good to get back to something like our best.

"The way we beat them was very positive and hopefully we can put a bit of a run together and things can settle down.

"Getting a settled side is key because we've had to rely on younger lads stepping up and it hasn't been fair on them."

He revealed Hewson and Andrews had shown the squad videos of recent performances in a bid to snuff out small mistakes which were costing Reds points.

The move paid off but May was quick to give credit to the whole team for Saturday's clean sheet.

"I don't think the back four can just take credit for the clean sheet, it was defending from the front," he said.

"In those situations you've just got to do the best you can and everyone's got to pull together, which they did but we can't just do it for one week, it has to continue."
