Workington boss Dave Hewson was happy with his side’s contribution to an entertaining friendly with Carlisle United.

Although they lost 3-0, Reds acquitted themselves well, particularly in a goalless first half.

Second-half goals from Shaun Miller and two trialists gave the League Two side their victory.

Hewson said: “I was thoroughly pleased with the effort put in by the lads. It was a great work-out and I think we put on a show in the first half.

“Carlisle brought two different sides, so it was always going to be hard for us, and I thought it was more a case of some tired legs in the second half.

“I was pleased with our discipline and the way we used the ball.

“It’s always a test against a professional side who can put out two different sides and that made a difference.

“One or two of the younger players got a taste of the action and they are ones for the future as we try an build up a strong local base. ”

Dave Symington was unavailable for the game while Gari Rownree isn’t quite ready to resume after his ankle injury at the end of last season.

Jamie Mellon, who was with Holker Old Boys last season had played in two previous friendlies, but was nursing a knock and didn’t play any part against United.

Reds should have been back in action next Wednesday at home to Bishop Auckland but the north east-outfit has pulled out.

“I’m very disappointed because our training schedule had been planned around the friendlies. I am trying to fix up a replacement game,” said Hewson.

It means Workington’s next match will not be until Saturday, July 29 when they will play at Kendal.

United manager Keith Curle involved new signings Jack Bonham, Hallam Hope and Tom Parkes, as he again fielded two different XIs in each half.

Youth player Sam Adewusi also got a second-half outing, as senior players Kelvin Etuhu, Jason Kennedy, John O’Sullivan and Mike Jones were not involved. United have yet to comment on the fate of any of their trialists.
