Scottish Premier League side St Mirren have banned Workington Reds from signing striker Lewis Guy.

The 26-year-old agreed a deal with Darren Edmondson, but The Buddies vowed to renege on a contract offered to the Cumbrian if he played.

Ex-Doncaster and MK Dons hit man Guy has a pre-contract agreement with Danny Lennon’s men, but will continue to train at Borough Park until the end of the season.

Edmondson hoped Guy would be free to help his side’s chances of avoiding relegation, until St Mirren pulled the plug at the 11th hour.

Workington have added four new faces to their squad this week with Jordan Connerton, Adam Fylnn, Lewis Galpin and Michael Roberts all signing within the last 48 hours.

Edmondson said: “Obviously it would have been nice to add someone of Lewis’s quality to our squad, but we have managed to land four of our targets.

“Missing out on Lewis is a blow because he is a great footballer.”

Adding young Crewe striker Connerton to his ranks, Edmondson said he could be the man to fire Workington to safety.

Connerton rose to prominence with Lancaster, before a move to League Two.

The lively 22-year-old was once a target for Motherwell, and Edmondson believes he can make an instant impact.

Experienced defender Flynn was recently released by Reds’ rivals Altrincham.

The 31-year-old has also captained Southport.

Describing him as a big-game player, Edmondson said: “Adam adds more experience to the squad.

“He’s knows this league and offers something different at the back.

“Jordan has bags of pace and a deadly shot. He’s scored a lot of goals at this level.”

Middlesbrough teenagers Galpin and Roberts, both 18, have signed work experience forms.

Both can play across the back four with Roberts capable of pushing into midfield.

The foursome join Saint Kitts and Nevis striker Matthew Berkeley after the international joined them earlier this month.

All five go into the squad to face Harrogate tomorrow as defender Gari Rowntree starts his three-game ban.

Stefan Scott is free to play again before his three-match suspension kicks in.

Precariously placed in the Blue Square Bet North, Reds sit just two places and two points ahead of Vauxhall Motors in the final relegation place.

Workington also missed out on ex-Carlisle United schemer Jeff Smith.

The midfielder opted to stay at Whitby to help his friend and Seasiders manager Darren Williams in their battle against the drop.

Edmondson said: “It says more about Jeff as a man that he decided to stay and help his friend than join us for a few extra quid.”
