Local ARL stars are heading to Jamaica this weekend to represent Great Britain.

Ellenborough’s Andrew Ostle, Seaton’s Liam Wood and Distington’s Bryan Ritchie are among a strong BARLA GB under-23 squad that will tour the island.

They will be joined by fellow Cumbrians, Hensingham’s Jordan Thompson and Millom’s Marcus O’Brien in the side that will be mentored by Whitehaven-based tour manager Sean High and coached by Millom’s Tom Sibley.

High said: “As always I am privileged to lead any GB BARLA side. We have three games when we get out there in a two week period.

“We will also be entering two teams in a nine-a-side competition. This will be be a big ask for the players in such intense heat.

“There are four West Cumbrians in the squad who are all making their BARLA debuts. Both Bryan Ritchie and Liam Wood played a big part in the county championship games where Cumbria were crowned champions.

“And Jordan Thompson and Andrew Ostle both played key roles in their club’s promotion.”

High added that previous tours to Jamaica had been a huge success and that the country had benefited from the BARLA matches.

High also thanked Whitehaven Town Council who are the main sponsors of the tour.
