Cockermouth Titans Rugby League Club are hoping to build on their junior success by launching an open age team next year.

The club was reborn this past season with under-16 and under-14 teams.

Sean Marsh took over the head coaching role and, with a dedicated committee have brought the club back from the brink.

Part way through the season the demand was so high in the town that an under-10 team was also established.

And now the club would love to see an open age team back in the Cumberland League and more youth teams throughout the age ranges.

"We ran an under-16 team about five years ago and that folded when those players turned to open age rugby," explained Marsh.

"We had a couple of years at open age but then the team folded. So this time we want it to last, there is a real base here to keep going.

"We are based permanently at the rugby union club who have taken us on board.

"We can't thank them enough they have been really helpful and hopefully it will benefit both clubs in the long term to keep numbers going."

Marsh and his committee have been kept busy, acquiring kits and funds to get the club afloat but now they are reaping the rewards.

The two Titans played well all season in the West Cumbria Youth League. The under-14s showed a lot of potential and shocked some established sides on the way to finishing fourth in their age group.

The under-16s found it tougher, with a young squad taking on older and more experienced teams but still came out with a lot of credit and knowledge for next season.

Alongside the matches, the club also bonded with parents and players off the field, with tips to Magic Weekend and the big Four Nations game at Workington between Scotland and New Zealand.

The youngster acted as flag bearers for both these occasions and, along with a successful fund day, the under-14s also got to train at Workington Town as part of the RFL's Embed the Pathway scheme.

Marsh added: "The club was rewarded by the West Cumbrian Youth League by winning the club of the year award.

"It was for bringing so many new faces to the game, showing commitment to the Embed the Pathway scheme, as well as showing a sense of community and fair play throughout the season."

The Under-16 squad saw success for Chris Potter and Chris Graham who were named in the newly re-formed Cumbria squad and Luke Broster was selected to play for the Foundation Academy at Newcastle Thunder.

The Titans are now appealing to any players who would like to get involved with the club at any age level to get in touch.

"If you have a child who would like to join a family orientated, friendly club or you are an adult who is looking to get back into the game please get in touch," said Marsh.
