Rochdale Mayfield have had a habit of undoing the ambitions of Cumbrian clubs in the National Conference Premier Division.

Kells and Wath Brow have both suffered checks against Mayfield, and Egremont have followed suit.

The Gillfoot side had put three straight wins together, which was the best sequence in the division. But that was ended on Saturday when the Rochdale side won 29-14 in West Cumbria.

It was their first victory in three games but they were never behind and a sin-binning for Egremont’s Kieran Glenn 15 minutes from time did not help the home side’s cause.

It was 16-4 at half time, a lead built on two tries inside the first eight minutes from ex-professional Wayne English and Jack Sampson.

Although John-Paul Brocklebank replied with a try for the hosts, another try on the half-hour by Matty Ashton gave Mayfield a handy advantage. Lewis Sheridan converted two of them.

When they scored again two minutes into the second half through Sheridan, it became a huge task for Egremont.

They were given some hope with a try from Lewis Beckwith, converted by Matty Bewsher but the chasm was too great.

The sin-binning of Glenn on 65 minutes virtually ended their chances, especially as Aidy Gleeson crashed over for another Mayfield try. Sheridan converted and Zak Baker chipped in with a drop goal.

Callum Aitken’s unconverted try for Egremont was merely a late statistical note.

Kells enjoyed a 10-4 half-time lead at second-in-the-table Thatto Heath but couldn’t see it through and were beaten 22-16.

Reece O’Neill and Lewis Smith had scored first-half tries for Kells, one of them converted by Dominic Wear.

Dan Birkett had scored Thatto Heath’s only try in the first half.

Early in the second half Brad Ashurst crossed for the Crusaders, but was answered immediately by O’Neill, scoring his second try, converted by Wear.

But back came Thatto Heath with a try from Matty Norton and Bobbie Goulding converted.

It was Goulding who scored the crucial try for the hosts, adding the conversion which was his third goal of the game.

The only Cumbrian winners on the day were Wath Brow Hornets who were victors by 36-22 at Myton Warriors.

Hornets had held a 14-4 lead early in the game with tries from Nathan Lucock, Calum Farrer and Peter Caddy, one of them converted by Cole Walker-Taylor.

But the Warriors had levelled by half-time with tries by Nathan Slater (2) and Ryan Marrazza, plus a conversion by Richard Dunham.

Wath Brow cut loose in the second-half as they established a big lead with tries from Jamie Devine, Caddy, Matt Huby and Walker-Taylor. With three conversions from Walker-Taylor the Cumbrians were home and hosed.

It rather spoiled their points differential column when Andy Oades and Wes Newton scored tries for the hosts in the last seven minutes.
