Flimby became the first team to beat Kells in this season’s Iggesund Cumberland ARL when they came out on top 22-14 at the weekend.

The home side scored tries through Darren Pape, Dean Scholey, Ethan Williams and Grant Underwood. Callum Moffat landed three conversions.

Stephen McCourt (2) and Michael Orr scored the Kells tries, one of which was converted by Ryan Doran.

Egremont lead the way at the top of the league after a hard-fought 31-24 win at Aspatria.

Aspatria were leading 18-8 after 45 minutes and looked to be in control but an Egremont fight back, led by Matthew Henson, put pay to any hopes of victory.

The game was riveting from the opening exchanges and both sides were probing, looking for any weaknesses but it was Guy Reed who broke the deadlock after four minutes.

An excellent kick on the last tackle from Johnson forced an Egremont knock-on and from the resulting attacking scrum Aspatria built a good platform.

Brad Bouch ran strongly and produced a superb offload for Reed who was on his shoulder and he dived over near the posts. Johnson converted for 6-0.

The game was nip and tuck and both defences were cancelling each other out but some nice hands down the blind side saw Kris Beattie power his way through three defenders to score a wonderful solo try.

Egremont then hit a purple patch and some strong work from the Rangers pack forced successive turnovers from Aspatria and they started an attacking set on the Hornets’ 40-metre line.

More mistakes meant that Egremont were camped in the Aspatria 20-metre zone and the pressure told when Egremont hooker, Lee Rogers burrowed over.

Egremont scored again eight minutes later via Gary Elliott to reduce the deficit to only two points.

This seemed to spur the Hornets into action and it was Beattie again who hit a superb line from a Johnson pass to secure his brace on 39 minutes to make the half-time score 14-8.

The second half started in a positive manner for Aspatria as stand-off, Gareth Nicholson got over the whitewash to extend the lead to 18-8.

But the lead was cut after only four minutes as Matthew Henson scored the first of his three tries after Jono Bethwaite conceded a penalty for stripping the ball.

Two plays later, Henson powered over. His half-back partner, Anthony Leak added the goal and it was 18-14.

For the next 15 minutes it was all Egremont as Henson scored two more tries to seal his hat-trick. The last of these tries, on 65 minutes, was after an outrageous dummy.

In between this, Cameron Moore scored a try and Leak and Pat Bennett added two goals to give Egremont a 30-18 lead.

Despite this, Aspatria kept battling and Mark Irwin forced his way over from close range on 70 minutes and Johnson added the goal to reduce the gap to six points with 10 minutes to go. But it was Henson who made sure of the victory when he slotted a drop goal on 78 minutes.

The closest game was at Cockermouth where the Titans were beaten 28-24 by a vibrant Broughton Red Rose side who look capable of springing a number of surprises this year.

Ed Gate (2), Paul Osborne, Shane Williams and Jono Ritson scored the Red Rose tries with Jonty Bell landing four goals.

Cockermouth also scored five tries but the difference was in the goal-kicking where Gareth Skillen could improve only two.

The touchdowns came from Matthew Jackson, John Dollochin, Gareth Skillen, Connor Barnard and Matt Skillen.

Just two weeks into the season, Red Rose are the only unbeaten side, which suggests that despite only having seven clubs it’s going to be a close fought competition.
