The Cumbria Men's League match crunch match between Seaton and Distington had to be abandoned after a serious injury.

Distington were winning 4-0 at Seaton on Saturday when the home side’s young forward Brett Symes suffered a double fracture of the leg.

Symes had been tipped for a bright future, with a possible professional offer in the near future. But he’s likely to be sidelined for a while now after a bad break.

There were only 17 minutes on the clock when the decision was taken to abandon the game and the outcome will be discussed by the management committee and the fixture secretary.

A win, or even a draw, would have been good enough to earn Distington the Men’s League title.

There was an early finish, too, in the Iggesund Cumberland ARL when referee Neil Byers blew for time 11 minutes from the end of the game between Aspatria and Kells A.

A player had suffered an injury and both teams wanted the game stopped even though there wasn’t much between them. The result will stand with Aspatria edging a tight affair 28-24.

Aspatria had led 18-14 at half-time after getting a flier with a try on five minutes from Ken Bowes, which Luke Johnston converted.

Kells came back with an unconverted try from Jordan Milburn on 13 minutes, and six minutes later the Copeland side took the lead with a try from Neil Batty, which was converted by Jake Parker.

But two tries in a three-minute spell from Richard Holliday and Bowes, both converted by Johnston, gave Aspatria the advantage but eight minutes before the break, Kells scored a third try through Darren Seeds.

Both teams scored 10 points in the second half. Bowes scored two more tries for the Hornets to take his match tally to four, and one was converted by Johnston.

For Kells there were tries for Kieran Alcrow and Kevin Agnew, one converted by Parker.

Aspatria will contest the top-four play-offs, as will Flimby who were 32-22 winners at Lowca.

Meanwhile, Cumbria U19s will take on Scotland U19s at Barrow's Craven Park on Sunday (2pm ko).

West Cumbrians Ben Robinson, of Maryport, Distington's Liam McNicholas and Jordan O'Leary, of Seaton, are set to feature for Cumbria.
