Seaton RL amateur Liam Wood jets off to Australia tomorrow to make his mark in the Student World Cup.

Wood has been named as part of the England Universities side that will compete in the two-week event

He earned his call-up to the squad after impressing during the Student Origin game earlier this year.

Seaton rugby secretary Peter Gilmour believes he has a bright future ahead of him.

"Everyone at the club is delighted for Liam," he said. "He had a stint with Workington Town at the start of the season and decided that he wanted to focus on gaining selection to the England Students team for the World Cup.

"He has been absolutely immense for us this season arguably our best performer, he's really led from the front.

"He's dedicated himself to the sport, I genuinely don't think many people train as hard as he does and this is a much deserved accolade for him."

Students from all over the country have been selected in the 24-man squad, with 14 Universities represented.

Leeds Beckett and Gloucestershire top the pile with four players each, whilst Hull has three and Loughborough and Nottingham Trent have two.

England head coach Colin Baker said: ""I am confident that we have picked the best squad in terms of talent, commitment and attitude and I am looking forward to working with the players and staff on the Student World Cup campaign."

The Student World Cup will be played throughout Western Sydney and will run over nine days.

Rugby League powerhouses Australia, New Zealand and England will be joined by Wales, Ireland and Scotland.

Matches will take place in the Rugby League strongholds of St Marys, Wentworthville, Windsor, and Cabramatta with the final taking place on July 16 at Penrith Panthers' home ground Pepper Stadium.

England's first game will be next Friday against Australia at St Mary's Stadium, Sydney, ko 6.45pm.
