Two games dominate the amateur rugby league scene in west Cumbria tomorrow.

The first, at Distington ARLFC, brings together Hensingham and Walney Central in the final of the BARLA Cumbria Cup.

Just up the road at Egremont, there’s a tasty derby clash in the National Conference Premier Division when the home side entertain Kells.

Hensingham have won the Cumbria Men’s League without dropping a single point and will be hot favourites to wrap up the double.

Walney pulled out of last week’s top-four play-off semi-final because they couldn’t raise enough players, but insist they will be at strength for the final.

Hensingham were in the first ever final back in the 1982/83 season when they lost 15-11 to local rivals Kells.

Since then, they have won the trophy three times (7-0 v Millom 1990/91); (11-4 v Kells 1993/94) and (8-6 v Kells in 2002/03).

Tomorrow’s opponents Walney Central have only won the trophy once, but will take heart from that victory in 1994/95 as they beat Hensingham 18-16.

In the last six years, however, Walney have appeared in four finals and lost them all to Maryport (twice), Kells and Seaton.

Hensingham go into the final on the back of a tougher work-out than they were expecting last week.

With Walney pulling-out of the semi-final, fifth-placed Seaton Rangers filled their place with very little prior notice.

Trailing 18-6 at half-time, Seaton made a real game of it by winning the second half 12-10 – probably the sort of game that Hensingham would have preferred to keep them focused for tomorrow’s final.

Meanwhile, in the Conference, the big game is at Gillfoot where Egremont and Kells go head to head.

This is now a battle for the final top six place, when just a few weeks ago Egremont looked doomed to another desperate fight against relegation.

But Egremont have turned things around superbly and are closer to a play-off place than they are the bottom three.

Kells are also still battling for that lost spot and are two points ahead of Egremont with a game in hand (against Wath Brow).

Myton Warriors are also involved in the race for sixth and have a home game tomorrow with doomed bottom side Leigh Miners Rangers.

Wath Brow, assured of a play-off place, travel to next bottom Pilkington Recs who look as though they will be joining Leigh Miners Rangers in the drop.
