Clean winning sweep for Cockermouth sides

Cockermouth found themselves 14-0 down after 20 minutes of this U17 game on the Hump at Grasmoor on Sunday.
But they then rallied to run in 37 unopposed points with Robert Ward scoring a hat-trick of touchdowns.
Ward scored Cockermouth’s first two tries and then Greg Barnes went over to put the home side into the lead.
Ward scored again after which Ben Agnew got the first of his two scores, the first being converted by Mark Stephens.
Between Agnew’s efforts was a try from Shane Musgrave for Cockermouth, for whom Justin Rooney gave a strong performance.
On Sunday Cockermouth U17s are at Keswick, meet at Grasmoor at 9.45am for an 11am kick-off.
Playing on a heavy Tarn Close pitch Cockermouth’s U15 side enjoyed a resounding victory over Upper Eden.
Harry Rigby started the score ticking over and other first-half tries followed from James Denham and Andy Range, the last converted by Rigby.
In the second half James Milligan and Connor Spence (2) touched down and Rigby added a conversion.
Wigton, playing with the win in the first half, scored three tries and two conversions to lead 19-10 at the break, Cockermouth’s points having come from tries by Jack Dawson and Sam Slinger in an U17 game.
After the turn round Wigton were limited to just two tries while Cockermouth took command of the game to run in five touch-downs.
Rory McGreevy scored two, James Fawkes got his first for the team, Harry Rigby got a try and two conversions, and Dawson scored his second.
Cockermouth U14s took on Gosforth from the North East on a heavy pitch that prevented a fast flowing game.
Cockermouth were under pressure from a well-drilled Gosforth side from the start and had to defend.
However, Cockermouth was first on the score sheet when they got into the Gosforth half for the first time.
Matt Davis off loaded to Josh Whild who spun out of a tackle for the first try.
The game went back and forwards as neither side was able to assert themselves, Gosforth had the majority of the territory but were unable to convert it into points at this time.
The Cockermouth centres then chased a kick from stand off Mike Fearon putting the Gosforth full back under pressure resulting in Liam McAvoy gathering the ball to score the second try, which Jack Gaskell converted.
Again it was Gosforth who took the game to Cockermouth and the defence was tested time and time again but the defensive line was not breached.
Gosforth finally got a try in the second half and this seemed to wake Cockermouth and the forwards again started to take on their counterparts.
Tom Stagg and Sam Wilson combined to drive them back before the ball was released to the backs, finally reaching McAvoy going in for his second try.
The game see-sawed between both sides but Gosforth got the better when in a line out near Cockermouth’s line they scored a converted try.
Cockermouth again responded by driving at the Gosforth line for McAvoy to score his third and Cockermouth’s final try of the match.
Gosforth responded and drove hard at the Cockermouth line and managed to score their final try.
Special mention should be made of Adam Brough, James Hunter, Andrew McClintock, Jack Gaskell and Ashley Friel who played up an age group for Cockermouth.
