Egremont moved to the top of the Cumbria League table with a 21-18 win over Keswick.

The top of the table encounter was billed to be a closely fought contest and it went down to a last minute penalty which secured the win for the home side.

Egremont couldn’t have asked for a better start as winger Josh Kelly scored in the first minute after a 30-metre run.

This was quickly followed by Callum Aitken who touched down from a well-judged chip to put Egremont 10-0 up.

Keswick gathered their composure and scored a converted try and a penalty to level the scores at half-time.

Shortly after the break, Keswick took the lead with a penalty but James Mcdonald kicked a penalty to even the scores again.

This inspired the home and, following a break by Jamie Devine in midfield, the Egremont forwards got in on the act by driving over from a lineout to reclaim the lead.

Keswick refused to lie down and scored their second try of the afternoon to level the score for the third time.

Egremont pushed to go ahead once more but had a try disallowed.

They then forced a last-minute penalty which Mcdonald kicked to give Egremont the win to go to the top of the league table.

Workington are just a point behind Egremont in the table after their 44-5 win over Millom and just six points separate the top four teams.

Cockermouth beat Carlisle Crusaders 19-10 and Moresby won 26-19 against Kendal 2nd XV.
