Workington recovered from a stodgy opening half to score five second-half tries as they overcame Moresby 29-3 in the Cumbria League.

The first half started virtually even, with action largely confined in midfield as both sides cancelled out each other.

But, gradually, the visitors began to dominate Zebras territory and on 11 minutes this was rewarded when Marc Bainbridge slotted over a penalty to put the Red Devils ahead.

Bainbridge almost doubled the lead two minutes later with another penalty, but he saw his kick smack off the upright.

On 17 minutes, Moresby were reduced to 14 men after Steven Smith was sin binned for not being 10 yards, but Workington couldn't take advantage of the extra man.

Whatever was said at half-time clearly did the trick for Workington as the second half was barely two minutes when a quick penalty tap yielded a catch and drive that culminated with Andrew Bowe going over for an unconverted try.

Soon aftewards, Moresby saw another player see yellow - this time for a collapsed maul.

Nine minutes later Zebras drew further ahead as another penalty tap saw David Todhunter burst through to go over the whitewash, with Lee Wordsworth successfully converting.

It got worse for the visitors two minutes later when man of the match Mark Murphy produced another fierce run along the flanks to set up a three-man move that ended with Rob Hodgson breezing nonchalantly under the sticks. Wordsworth converted again.

Workington were now on fire with the carrot of a bonus point tantalisingly on offer.

On 65 minutes, Moresby tried to clear their lines but instead the kick fell straight to Bede O'Connor who effortlessly shrugged off his opposite winger to gallop away into the corner for a well-crafted try. Wordsworth unluckily saw his conversion hit the post.

Workington had the last word eight minutes from time as Shaun Murphy got on the end of a Todhunter punt and swiftly crashed down for another unconverted try.

Meanwhile, Keswick still lead the way but had to work hard for their 29-19 home win over Kendal 2nd XV.

Cockermouth were the day’s biggest scorers when they ran out 74-7 winners over Wigton Wanderers.

Creighton lost 81-10 at home to Furness, Carlisle Crusaders lost 36-22 at home to Windermere and Penrith A went down 29-14 at Millom.

In the North Lancs/Cumbria League, Aspatria rattled in 10 tries for a 64-0 victory at Ashton-under-Lyne to move into fourth place in the table.

Silloth narrowly lost 13-12 at home to Oldham.
