In the North Lancs/Cumbria League, St Benedict’s and Silloth sit at the top of the table after their opening games with two bonus point wins.

Saints travel to Aldwinians this weekend looking to make it three wins from three in the new season.

“We’re pleased with the numbers in training, the attitude the players are showing and 15 tries in our first two games speaks for itself,” Stephen Howse said.

“It doesn’t matter what opposition you face, you still have to score.”

Saints beat Bolton 39-34 on the opening day and then hammered Ashton-Under-Lyne 70-3 last weekend.

“Our goal is to play a consistent team throughout the year,” Howse continued.

“We don’t want to set any targets. There are a lot of good fixtures coming up and we’ve got the Intermediate Cup games too.

“There are a lot of players in the second team who are desperate to play and we want to see them given a chance to do so.”

Silloth’s Director of Rugby Mark Orchard admitted he was surprised by the manner of his side’s victory at the weekend in their first home North Lancs Cumbria League fixture.

They beat Aldwinians 41-10 to pick up their second bonus point win of the year.

“I was surprised, to be honest,” he said. “We were told that teams in this league played for 80 minutes but that wasn’t the case at the weekend.

“They tried everything and didn’t have any answers.

“We were always positive that we would take our try scoring attributes from the Cumbria League into this league and over the last two seasons we’ve had 25 and 24 individual scorers.

“We can score from anywhere and we’re showing that and when you look at the league table we’ve only conceded 15 points too.

“We are expecting our biggest test of the season against Tyldesley this weekend.

“We don’t know anything about them because they are new to the league as well but that could work in our favour.”

Aspatria head coach Mike Scott is also pleased with his side’s good start to the season after picking up two wins from their opening two games.

The Black Reds take on Bolton this weekend.

“It’s a great start because we are normally playing catch-up in October and November,” Scott said. “Bolton did a job over us last time we played them two years ago so we’re expecting a tough test.

“But we always fancy our changes against anyone, especially at home.

“There’s more or less a clean bill of health and there’s 27 players to pick from.”

Wigton are at home to De La Salle this weekend after their 33-6 loss to Fleetwood and Whitehaven are still looking for their first win of the season and are away to Fleetwood.

Egremont and Keswick are top of the Cumbria League with two wins from two games and are the only sides to have kept a 100 per cent win record at the start of the new year.

North One West side Penrith will be looking to make it two wins in a row after their first victory of the season last weekend.

The greens picked up a bonus point win over Rochdale with a 36-10 scoreline at Winters Park and they are on the road this weekend to take on Widnes.

“We were delighted with the win on Saturday,” Penrith’s Mike Sanderson said.

“You can’t complain with a bonus point win.

Fellow North One West side Carlisle welcome Broughton Park to Warwick Road this weekend.

Carlisle picked up their first win of the new season over Widnes last weekend with a 27-7 victory, Matty Roper scoring a brace of tries for the city side.
