Much better from Town

WORKINGTON Town coach Dave Rotheram called for a big improvement against a Cumbrian Amateurs team after the 48-0 mauling at the hands of Whitehaven, and they duly obliged.

Rotheram told his men that they are playing for their shirt ahead of the game and Town didn’t let him down as they ran out 38-16 winners.

Tries from Ryan Blair (2), Kiwi trialist Matt Ashe, Mark Routledge, Franko Kmet, James Robinson and new boy Mark McCally compiled the defeat on the Amateurs. Forber also kicked six conversions.

Both coaches went home happy after the three, 30 minutes sections.

Cumbria Amateur joint-coaches Gary Charlton and Martin Oglanby were delighted with the performances of their players in a game - watched by 687 at Derwent Park on Wednesday night - that was the final selection tester for the county championships.

Charlton said: “On a scale of one to 10, I would rate our performance at about a six.

“We asked for commitment and they gave it to us.”

Town’s final pre-season friendly, at Leigh Centurions on Sunday week, will be their final game before the regular season kicks-off with a Northern Rail Cup clash at home to Halifax on February 3.
