SL challenge wanted

WORKINGTON Town boss Dave Rotheram wanted any of the big boys from Super League in the Challenge Cup fourth round.

St Helens, Wigan and Leeds were top of Rotheram’s list ahead of last night’s.

Rotheram said: “Realistically we are not going to win the Challenge Cup, so we want to make sure that we get a good draw.

“A home tie against Saints, Wigan or Leeds would be great because our lads will be able to test themselves against the best, as well as getting the club some much needed money.”

Scrum half Jay Duffy, 20, made his debut against Wigan St Patrick’s last weekend and put in a good performance according to Rotheram.

He said: “The lad fitted in well and did what we asked of him. It was good to see.

“The result was a moral boosting win for us. It is always nice when you hit 50 points. The lads went out there and enjoyed their rugby and that is important.”

A Shaun Lunt hat-trick and tries from Mark McCully, two, Jason Mossop, Ryan Benjafield, Dean Burgess, Ryan Blair, with Carl Forber kicking the extras. (See page 51 for match report and photographs)

Sunday's game against Keighley is Town's final Northern Rail Cup group match and a victory would set them up well for the Easter weekend which will see them entertain Barrow on Good Friday before travelling to Gateshead Thunder on Easter Monday.

Rotheram said: “Before the competition started we would have been happy with third place in a group with Whitehaven and Halifax. We must win this weekend to secure that.”
