Town’s derby trip switched to tomorrow

WORKINGTON Town face another tough game this weekend taking on Cumbrian rivals Barrow at Craven Park.

The game was scheduled for tonight but floodlight problems at Cravan Park mean it has been switched to tomorrow with a 3pm kick-off.

Town have only won one game so far this season, having been unlucky on numerous occasions, losing by less than six points four times.

Yet Town are still in mid-table helped by their losing bonus points.

Last weekend Town went down 30-20 to Swinton Lions.

Coach Dave Rotheram said: “We have shown glimpses all year, but we have to perform.

“There’s no point saying we are nearly there.

“We have had long enough this season. You target all your home games, and we should be beating Swinton at home.

“We are the bonus point kings, but that’s not what it’s about.”

One high point was the continuing form of prop Dean Burgess, man-of-the-match following another inspired display. “He’s an outstanding individual,” said Rotheram. “He went way beyond the call of duty and showed great leadership.”

This week Town were the latest victims of Super League’s unprecedented injury crisis.

Earlier this month an astonishing 65 players were unavailable for top-flight action due to injury, up from 48 at the same time last year.

This meant almost a quarter of all players were sidelined – and it’s having a knock-on effect at the lower level.

Town boss Dave Rotheram has been working hard to bolster his NL2 squad with loan deals for Super League or NL1 talent, but to no avail.

Rotheram said: “The team we have is the team we can afford, at the moment. Twenty-five per cent of SL players are injured so no players are filtering down.”
