Billy Southward will make history tomorrow when he takes to the field in the blue and white colours of Workington Town.

Grandson of the legendary Town star and Great Britain winger Ike Southward, the 19-year-old will make his debut for the club in their pre-season friendly with Widnes Under-19s.

And it is a proud moment for his family and for the Derwent Park club, where Ike was one of the most famous sons.

"I know Billy well and I know how much it means to him to play for this club and his family as well," said Town head coach Dave Clark.

"This is a great opportunity for him and he is really enjoying being part of the club.

"If he plays well in pre-season he might find himself playing in the memorial game which would be superb for his family."

Billy, who lives in Workington, was well-known to Clark who had coached him during his Cumbria Storm days.

And a number of the youngsters from that set-up have been training with Town in the pre-season and some will feature tomorrow as trialists.

In the great tradition of his grandfather Ike, Billy looks set to play on the wing.

Clark added: "He's an outside back, he can play on the wing or at full-back. "Tomorrow is a good chance for him to get some game time and move forward with the club.

"It would be great for him to carry that proud history on. I know he will be very proud to pull that blue and white jersey on for the first time."

Town's director of rugby Les Ashe echoed the thoughts of Clark and said that Billy's addition to the team was purely down to the youngster's hard work and talent.

"Billy has got here on his own merit and with the support of his coaches," added Ashe.

"For him, personally, this is a huge step in his development but a very nice one.

"And for his family I think it will be a fantastic day and a great opportunity for the club, with the history surrounding one of the greatest, if not the greatest players that Ike was.

"If Ike was still with us he would have been immensely proud to see him wear the blue and white of Workington."

Billy, whose father is Ike's son Mark Southward, was a former pupil at St Joseph's School and was part of the successful Seaton Rangers Under-16 team, alongside Conor Fitzsimmons.

Tomorrow's match at Derwent Park, kicks off at 3pm.
