Coach Dave Clark admitted Workington Town made their victory over Gloucestershire All Golds hard for themselves.

The 54-22 scoreline slightly flattered Workington with the majority of the points coming in the final 20 minutes.

It was a much-improved second-half performance, spearheaded by Carl Forber, that got Town the vital League One points and Clark said there were still things to work on.

“We were aware of what threats Gloucestershire had on the field today and they still scored some points on us which is worrying,” said Clark, whose side meet the All Golds again on Saturday in the iPro Sports League Cup quarter-finals at Derwent Park.

“We need to look at the video again and make sure we fine tune our defence but again it is our mentality in the second half that got us through.

“If we had put that right in the first half, I think it could have been a lot easier for us. I think we made it hard for ourselves today.

“I was a little concerned at half-time with the way we were playing the game. A couple of errors gave them an opportunity to put some good pressure on us.”

But Clark had praise for Forber, who helped lead Town back to victory after trading blows with the All Golds for the majority of the match.

“Our game management needed attention at half-time and we looked to improve in the second half,” he added.

“As the game went on, we had some direction in our middle, the forwards were running hard and there was an opportunity for Forber and Stuart Howarth to create something on the edges.

“Now we are looking forward to next week and the iPro Cup quarter-final. It’s going to be a big challenge again.”
