Workington Town prop forward Kris Coward has spoken of his delight after making 150 appearances for the club.

Coward reached the milestone in last weekend’s 30-6 win over Hunslet Hawks which secured eighth place for his side ahead of the league splitting for the Super 8s.

After leading the team out on to the field, Coward said it was a proud moment as he was unsure he would make it to his landmark 150th game.

“It was really surreal,” Coward admitted. “I hadn’t led a team out since I was an amateur at Hensingham.

“I was really proud and it’s a great milestone, although it feels like 250 games.

“I thought after having shoulder surgery earlier this year that I wasn’t going to make it. I knew I was around 12 games off and at one point I was worried but I’m really glad to have got it now.”

As Town return to training this week following a week off, Coward believes that he and his team-mates will be prepared to fight for a place in the Championship Shield play-offs.

“Phil Veivers won’t let us drop and he’ll expect us to be ready to go as soon as we’re back in training,” he continued.

“We’re looking back to our form last year, we were down in the dumps and then went on a seven-game winning run.

“We know we have to be on point every week in these last seven games.

“I don’t want to disrespect teams from last season but you knew that you could turn up to some games and you’d get a win if you were playing at home.

“Haven winning against Featherstone and Batley winning against Dewsbury shows it’ll be a really exciting finish to the year and we have to be ready.”

Town go into their first Super 8s fixture this weekend against Batley Bulldogs on the back of a three-game winning run and the Town prop says confidence is high.

“We knew we were capable of getting these wins,” he continued. “We knew once we would get one win that our confidence would grow. We’ll be playing the three teams we beat in this run again and our fourth home game will be important.

“We know we’ll get a dusting down when we train again but we’ll be back recharged and ready to kick on from there.”

Workington Town are putting on their Kids for a Quid deal for this weekend’s opening Super 8s fixture against Batley Bulldogs.

Children can watch the game for £1 if accompanied by a paying adult on the day.

Town’s commercial manager Barry Scholey said: “It’s to give the kids on their holidays something extra to do and it’s a reward to those who have followed us all season. The future of our club is in our young supporters.
