Workington Town prop forward Dan Rooney says he is delighted to be back in action after missing all but one game of the 2015 Championship season.

Rooney has recovered from surgery on his shoulder and taken part in both of Town's pre-season fixtures.

With game time under his belt, the prop is hoping to remain a regular feature in Phil Veivers' side.

"After having all of last year out, I just wanted to get through a couple of games to set myself up for the start of the season," Rooney told News & Star Sport.

"I'm happy with how I've played but there's still a bit to go fitness-wise so I need to kick on and keep going in training.

"My confidence is getting there now and once I get more games under my belt I'll improve."

Rooney, part of the side which took part in the pre-season fixture against Whitehaven on Sunday, believes that he and his team-mates will be well prepared for next weekend's season opening game at home against Sheffield.

"I thought the conditions against Whitehaven were worse than the Barrow game," he continued.

"Phil [Veivers] wants us to be tough defensively and I thought we were against Haven.

"We were happy with our contact and our line speed was good.

"Unfortunately there's not much you can do with the ball on a day like we had on Sunday."
