A delighted Phil Veivers paid tribute to a great defensive effort from Workington Town that saw them annihilate Doncaster yesterday.

The 62-0 victory, along with Whitehaven’s defeat, leaves them three points clear in fourth position as the season draws to a climax.

Town survived several repeat sets on their line to hold off the visitors and in turn ran in some pretty good tries of their own.

Half-back Jarrod Sammut led the way with a commanding display and both he and Brett Carter finished with hat-tricks to their name. “I’m a pretty happy coach,” said Veivers after the final whistle.

“We played some attractive footie out there and scored some good tries.

“The thing I was pleased about the most was the zero. I thought we were a pretty good outfit defensively today which is where we were off last week against Featherstone.

“They had nine sets coming into half-time and we held them out there and they had another four sets in the second half.

“So 13 sets on our goal-line and our goal line defence was pretty good today.”

He added: “Defence wins you games, you don’t have to score many points to win football games you just have to stop the opposition scoring.

“That was the pleasing thing today but we also scored some attractive tries and we played with a bit of expansion.

“Your winger gets a hat-trick, your half-back gets a hat-trick and the other winger gets two tries so I was very happy.”

Town now prepare to face London Broncos with Jarrad Stack still to come back into the line-up.
