Workington Town boss Dave Clark praised his side's defence which he believes has kept them alive in the race for the League 1 play-offs.

Town beat Doncaster 22-21 at Derwent Park in an action packed game and Clark says it is now up to them to keep that momentum going in the final three games of the Super 8s.

"It's just fantastic to keep going, we still have a slight chance of the play-offs and there is an opportunity there for us if we perform like we did today," said Clark.

"We now have three massive games but this win keeps us alive.

"I'd rather be in the position I am now than not so I think the players will have a week off and recover and get ready for the next game.

"Doncaster are a big physical side right throughout the team so we knew it would be physical through the middle but I thought our defence today at times was superb

"We solved some issues they were throwing at us and it was a credit to our team. There was some desire there, we were making some right decisions defensively and that won us the game."

It was a tense finish as Doncaster scored in the last couple of minutes to come to within a point of their hosts but Town managed to hold out to take the win.

Clark added: "I wish it wasn't as close as that. I thought we were going quite nicely at the back end of that game but we just gave them too many opportunities to get back in the game

"We weren't smart enough in the second half, we had opportunities to close them out and complete sets of six but we made some errors and gave them opportunities.

"But all credit to the boys, we wanted a win today. It doesn't matter how it looked, we got the points on the board and will move forward to the next game."

Town picked up three quick tries before half time that put them in the ascendancy while Doncaster were down to 12-men as Louis Sheriff was sin-binned for a high tackle on Tee Ritson.

And Clark thinks that purple patch was key to victory.

"That was the period we probably won the game," he admitted. "We got points on the board and got some confidence from it as well.

"It was just a good performance in the end and we got the points."

The Super 8s now take a short break as the Challenge Cup final is centre stage next weekend giving Town extra breathing room before they travel to second placed Cumbrian neighbours Barrow Raiders on September 3.
