Experienced half-back Carl Forber was praised by coach Dave Clark for stepping up to lead Workington Town to victory on Sunday.

Forber was made captain for the Ike Southward Memorial Trophy clash with rivals Whitehaven and lifted the silverware following the 32-16 win.

Clark declared the stand-off had excelled on the day as he finished with a try and three goals to his name to cap off a fine performance.

"We made him captain as the longest serving player in our squad on the day so it was fitting for him," said Clark.

"The trophy was for Ike Southward so it was important for him to lead our side and he did that with his performance as well.

"I think with the shape that we've got, we have some really clever players who know how to play at short or back ball.

"It gives our numbers six or seven different opportunities and variations of play and Carl excelled and it's great to see him perform."

Local props Stevie Scholey and Tom Curwen also came in for praise from a delighted Clark, who clinched his first West Cumbrian derby victory.

"In that first stint, Stevie especially stood out," said Clark.

"He's improved every week and I know he works hard outside the training regime that we've got.

"He does a lot of extra work and you can see that in his game. He put 25 minutes in, in that first half.

"Tom Curwen's first stint was excellent as well. Those type of players are really excelling in this environment and it's helping us a lot to continue with our desire this year in the competition."

There were home debuts for new boys Stuart Howarth, Conor Fitzsimmons and Wigan duo Macauley Davies and Kyle Shelford.

And Clark is pleased his squad is coming together ahead of the start of the season.

"Stuart played more minutes than the week before and it was good for him to see how we want to play the game and to see him gelling," said Clark.

"What he brings to us is more than skills, it is his guidance around the field and he did really well.

"Sam Dowsett again had a really good game and Perry Singleton was really strong.

"Conor Fitzsimmons had his first game and you can see what he's going to bring to us as a squad.

"There were lots of positives and we can see how we're moving together as a team."
