Latu Fifita will not feature for Workington Town this season as he is set to undergo another operation.

The former Tongan international has not featured for the club this season, after undergoing close season surgery.

But after returning to fitness, the forward has been struck by another blow which has ruled him out for the rest of the term.

Coach Phil Veivers said: "Latu will have to undergo another operation as he has had complications. His achilles tendon has been elongated and needs to be tightened up.

"It won't allow him to get up on the balls of his feet at the moment.

"I am devastated for Latu because of the effort he has made to get back on the field.

"He wanted to prove to everyone that he could play and now he won't get that opportunity this year.

"I'm just really disappointed for him and he is absolutely gutted."

Fifita, who has been dogged by injuries since joining, will have his operation next week.

The Aussie import joined Workington in time for the 2015 season from Queensland Cup side Northern Pride who had won the NRL State Championship the previous year.

Town will head to table toppers Leigh this Sunday, buoyed by their performance against Bradford last weekend, despite not picking up any points.

Veivers added: "It's the same old story, it's happened all year. We play really well and we are still not getting the vital two points that we are after.

"If we look at our team on paper, it is far better than what is performing out there.

"We maybe have been guilty of not sustaining the performance for the full 80 minutes."

Veivers is hoping that Brett Phillips and Perry Whiteley will be fit for this weekend's trip to Leigh.

The last time the two sides met was at Easter when Town travelled with just one substitute due to their injury crisis.

Veivers added: "I honestly believe that last time fatigue is what beat us because of a lack of subs.

"We need to go down there with a positive attitude and put up a performance that we can be proud of."
