Returning forward Alex Szostak says Workington Town turned a corner at the weekend and can now kick start their season.

Szostak has played the last two matches off the bench for Town after returning from a knee operation.

And he says the second half against Halifax proved to be a revelation.

"We definitely turned a corner. The first half was very indicative of our season so far," explained Szostak.

"Something goes against us and heads go down and we start looking at defeat but then Phil (Veivers) gave us a really good talking to at half time.

"It shook us up and we went back out with the old Workington Town mentality to work hard for each other.

"A bit of aggression and anger can be used to win games and get our self belief back.

"It made all the difference, it was truly a case of a game of two halves."

Szostak is pleased with his own comeback after admitting to a lot of frustration sitting on the sidelines for the opening weeks of the season.

He added: "I have been playing rugby for so many years now that I don't know what to do with myself when I'm not.

"But I recognise that you have to be patient with injuries and I have been extra patient with this one because I didn't want to come back too soon and be a liability.

"My knee is feeling nice and strong so I just need to get my lungs back and get my timing sorted in defence.

"Fitness is something I have never struggled with but when you have been out of the game for a while you have to get your timing back in order, which you can only do by playing.

"I have started my progression through the last two games and hopefully I will be selected against my former club Sheffield. I would love to get a good game in against them."

Town have this coming weekend off, due to the Challenge Cup taking centre stage before they head to face the Eagles on May 14.

And Szostak believes that if Town can get another win under their belt against Sheffield, then it will spark the start of their revival.

"They say winning becomes a habit and I think the same can be said of losing," he declared.

"We are addressing that as a team and we need to go into games with a more positive attitude.

"I think the second half against Halifax showed we have the potential. Lads from Halifax said to me that they couldn't understand why we weren't winning games.

"We are starting to get lads back from injury now so hopefully we can pick up some momentum and stability."

He added: "We need to kick on from the Halifax game and use it as a stepping stone.

"We have goals for the next few games and we need to get some wins under our belt and that will hopefully gets us a positive mentality.

"We certainly have the ability we just need to get the belief back. But as a team we are feeling positive."
