Workington Town winger Sam Forrester hopes that the try he scored against Barrow last weekend will be the first of many as he looks to claim a permanent spot in the side.

The former Maryport amateur made 15 appearances for Town last season, scoring three tries, but had limited game time once Elliot Miller returned from his injury.

Now that Miller has left the club for rivals Whitehaven, Forrester hopes to be a regular feature in Phil Veivers side in 2016.

“It was nice to get over the whitewash and hopefully it’ll be the first try of many this year,” Forrester said.

“I learned a lot off Elliot when I watched him in games and trained with him and hopefully the things he’s helped me with will help me nail down that spot this year.

“Phil really helped bring me on leaps and bounds in my first season with the club.

“Once you start playing professional you look at the game in a completely different way, it’s a lot different to the amateur game.”

The former BARLA international is very highly rated by Barrow head coach Paul Crarey, who coached Forrester in the national side.

The winger said it was good to have his first hit out of the year in front of his old coach.

“I was with Cresta at BARLA and he’s a really good coach,” he continued. “It was nice to get out there and have a first hit out.

"It’s important that you get used to the physical battle again and get your timings right.

“It’s nice to finally get out there and do everything we’ve worked on in training.

“It’s unfortunate that I rolled my ankle, but hopefully I’ll be alright for this weekend.”
