Workington Town vice chairman Mark Fryer is issuing a call to arms for all supporters this weekend ahead of the crunch derby clash with Whitehaven.

This is the biggest derby match between the two sides for a lot of years with Championship survival at stake.

Fryer says the Town fans can play a massive part in helping the team overcome their neighbours and hopefully move out of the relegation zone.

"It has been a tough season and there is certainly no bigger game for us than the derby on Sunday," said Fryer.

"There is so much at stake for both teams and I would urge the fans to turn out in their numbers and get behind us.

"The support on the terraces can make a huge difference to the players."

The last time the two sides met, back in July at the Zebra Claims Stadium, a 12-man Town just edged the game 30-28.

And it was a real thriller with a try for Jason Mossop in the dying seconds, converted by Jarrod Sammut after the final hooter had sounded.

There was a crowd of 1,138 in attendance but Fryer is keen to better that gate on Sunday, ko 3pm.

"We need people to come down and cheer the lads on. This is make or break for us," he added.

"We were so pleased after the Dewsbury win on Sunday and delighted for the fans.

"We have always had the belief that we have the squad to win games and to be fair we have played well in patches all year.

"But now this is crunch time and everyone has to stand up and be counted to try and secure our future in the Championship."

A win for Town against Haven could edge them ahead of Swinton in the league table on points difference, if the Lions lose their game at Sheffield Eagles.
