Full-back Brett Carter has become the fourth player to join Barrow Raiders from Workington Town.

Carter has followed former Town team-mates Jarrad Stack, Declan Hulme and Tom Walker to the Raiders this week.

And he says he is looking forward to working with Raiders boss Paul Crarey who handed him his first professional deal.

Carter, who began as an amateur at Barrow Island, came throughBarrow's previous academy system before signing for Crarey during his first spell as head coach.

But he left to join Workington in 2009 following changes to the coaching staff and spent eight seasons at Derwent Park.

“It's a shame it didn't work out last time because Cresta was the one who gave me my first professional contract there and I just found a different pathway through Workington, so I'm excited to come back,” said Carter.

“For me, it was a massive thing to enjoy my rugby again and from what I saw last year - even over the last couple of years - and because I know them all, I got feedback off how they gel with each other and they seem like a massive group of mates.

“That's why it's a massive thing for me; I just want to have a good laugh at training - and obviously get my head down and learn stuff as well, but a big part of it is to have fun as well.”

While primarily occupying the number one shirt at Town, Carter knows he may have to be versatile and take up a place on the wing for Barrow.

Ryan Fieldhouse and highly-rated young prospect Luke Cresswell are already fighting it out at Craven Park for the full-back role.

“All my career, I’ve played full-back and it’s a position I absolutely love because you get a bit of a free role,” said Carter.

“I’ve spoken to Paul and he said I could fill in a couple of different positions.

“I’m presuming I’ll be fighting for a wingers’ position, because Ryan Fieldhouse has been playing really well at full-back and they’ve got Luke there, who is a really good lad.

“I’m happy to play wherever he’ll put me and I just want to get back to enjoying my rugby again. As long as the team are going well, I don’t mind where I’m playing at the moment.”

Carter will also be taking a lead role off the field as well as part of the Raiders’ community team, along with new team-mates Joe Bullock and Tom Walker.
