Former Workington Town director Dave Bowden has spoken of his pride ahead of the unveiling of a statue of club legend Gus Risman at Wembley Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Risman is one of five rugby league stars who will be immortalised at Wembley Stadium after being chosen by a panel including journalists, coaches and players.

“He is our most famous son,” Bowdensaid.

“What he achieved in the game even before coming to Workington is fantastic and the image of him lifting the trophy for us in 1952 is the most iconic image we have.

“When our club was formed we needed a special person to kick us on and he was that person.”

Risman captained Workington to their Challenge Cup victory over Featherstone Rovers in 1952 and he made over 300 appearances for Town in an eight-year stint at the club.

“To be recognised throughout the whole rugby world is fantastic and he absolutely deserved to be picked,” Bowden continued.

“The statue will be there forever at the world’s most iconic venue.

“You think of everything that has happened at Wembley in the past and think of what may happen in the future and know that Gus, a Workington Town legend, will always be there.

“It makes me feel incredibly proud.”
