It will be brothers-in-arms at Workington Town next season as Kurt Maudling has joined sibling Gordon at Derwent Park.

Town have moved quickly to snap up the talented back-rower on a two-year contract and are hoping the brothers will be key members of the squad for 2018 season.

Maudling has been plying his trade with St Benedict's rugby union side, after a short spell with Whitehaven last season.

Town chairman Garry Mounsey said they had been watching Kurt for a while and were delighted to have finally secured his signature.

"We are delighted to have signed Kurt," said Mounsey. "He's a strong, hard and fast running back rower that we hope will fit into our pack nicely.

"We have had our eye on him for quite a while so we are delighted that he will be part of our squad for 2018."

And he added that seeing him link up with his brother was an extra bonus.

He said: "We are really looking forward to him linking up with his brother Gordon on the pitch and seeing what they can do.

"Hopefully the two of them, on the same team, can help take the team forward.

"It is also pleasing to have another Cumbrian on board as we look ahead to another League 1 season."

Maudling has a good pedigree in the amateur game, although mainly in the opposite code.

A Cumbria county player, he was a key member of the St Benedict's side that hit a hat-trick in 2016 when they won the North Lancs Cumbria League title, retained the Cumbria Cup and reached the Twickenham final of the national Intermediate Cup.

Town have been busy in the recruitment ranks recently, including naming ex-GB international Leon Pryce as their new coach.

Maudling's signing follows on from that of his brother Gordon, Jamie Doran, Jake Moore, Joe Hambley, Perry Singleton, Stevie Scholey and Tom Curwen.
