Workington Town boss Phil Veivers has admitted this has been the worst season in his coaching career for injuries.

At present he only has 17 fit players at the club, with two of those still doubtful ahead of this weekend's trip to Featherstone.

Veivers has been scouring the loan market but he is finding it hard to add to his depleted squad before today's noon deadline.

"I have never known a season like it on the injury front in all my years coaching," said Veivers.

"We started off with injuries to guys who had operations in the close season and it has just got worse.

"We are picking up more injuries every week and in between we are trying to be competitive in all our games and get results.

"I think we have been competitive in the majority of our games but we just haven't been able to get across the line."

Veivers added Seaton centre John Patrick to the ranks last week before the clash with Swinton Lions.

But he admitted that although there was more talent in the amateur ranks, it would be next season before they were ready to feature in the Championship.

"I keep hitting the phones trying to ask the question to look for players," added Veivers.

"There are players we are looking at for next year but they are not quite ready for this division this year.

"It is frustrating but I will keep trying and I have until noon to see if I can find a loanee or two."

Jon Sharp’s Featherstone team will be looking to make amends for last Friday’s defeat at Sheffield Eagles.

And Veivers knows it will be a tough test at the Big Fellas Stadium.

"We have a game plan and the personnel I have available can achieve so we just need to be smart in what we do," he added.
