Marwan Koukash is continuing to pursue his interest in Cumbrian rugby league.

Former Salford City Reds owner Koukash was a guest at Allerdale Borough Council's civic dinner on Friday, when plans were announced for a new sports stadium in Workington.

And he is planning to return to the area next weekend, to take in Workington Town's League One clash with Bradford Bulls on April 8.

"It is great to see Marwan continuing to show his interest in west Cumbria," said Town chairman Garry Mounsey.

"He is coming to take in our game against Bradford and seems to be very interested in what we are doing here in the county."

Koukash has openly spoken about his desire to create a new rugby league team in Cumbria and could call it Cumbrian Lakers.

But calls have gone out from some of the county's top Super League stars, including St Helens' Kyle Amor, that the team needs to be in the west of the county.

The multi-millionaire stated how he sees the county as a source of untapped potential.

He said he would like to get involved with professional rugby league in the county, with an eye on a place in Super League.

Koukash has been out of the sport since last year, having handed over control of Salford Red Devils to a community trust after four years as owner.

Allerdale council is working with both Workington Town and Workington Reds over a proposed new shared stadium.

Talks are in the early stages but all parties are keen to see how they progress.

It is hoped that, if successful, the new facilties would put the area firmly on the sporting map and allow them to host major events, such as the 2021 Rugby League World Cup.
