Liam McAvoy will miss this weekend's visit of Dewsbury Rams after being handed a one-match suspension.

The strong running Workington Town forward was charged by the RFL's disciplinary committee with a trip in the 23rd minute of the match against Swinton Lions.

He was offered an early guilty plea and accepted it so he was automatically handed a one-match ban.

Town vice chairman Mark Fryer, admitted the loss of McAvoy would be a blow ahead of the key Championship fixture at the Zebra Claims Stadium on Sunday.

"Liam will be a big miss as he has been playing well for us and is a key member of our pack," said Fryer.

"It comes at a bad time with all of our injury problems but we will put out a side against Dewsbury that is capable of going toe-to-toe with them.

"It is another huge game for us on Sunday, with three games to go before the Super Eights begin but everyone is determined to string some wins together and get us out of trouble."

Town are still rock bottom of the league table with five points separating them from Whitehaven, in the second relegation berth.

And the two sides will meet at the Zebra Claims Stadium the following weekend in what will be a very tense derby encounter.

Dewsbury are coming into this weekend's game on the back of a defeat at the hands of high-flying London Broncos.

The Rams lost 34-6 at Tetley’s Stadium, their 13th defeat of the season and leaves them just three points above Whitehaven and still fighting against the threat of relegation.
