The momentum is gathering lightning pace at Workington Town as the rugby league club aims to head into the 8s with a third successive victory on Sunday.

Eighth-placed Town travel to 11th-placed Hunslet Hawks (3pm ko) in the last game of the regular Championship season.

Workington, who have recently picked up impressive victories away at Whitehaven and then at home to London Broncos on Sunday, will be aiming to hold onto eighth place heading into the 8s.

Eighth will guarantee Town four home and three away games in the newly-created 8s competition.

Mark Fryer, vice-chairman, said: “There is a bit of confidence in the squad, which is good.

“I think that some of the players are realising that they are decent players. There has been a lack of confidence in there.

“We proved ourselves last season when we went on a seven-game streak. I would like to think we can put something together on those lines again.”

Workington’s most recent game on Sunday saw them dominate London Broncos at the Zebra Claims Stadium to record a 29-18 win.

Jarrod Sammut was at the heart of most of Workington’s superb attacking play and has been a key figure for the team since joining last month.

But Fryer was quick to point out that Sammut has quality players around him. He said: “Jarrod has to have the players around him. I think the players have responded to his enthusiasm, drive and his organisation.”

On the Broncos win, Fryer added: “It was on par with the Whitehaven game the week before – that laid the foundation for the Broncos game. We just upped the momentum even higher, from minute one to 80 minutes.

“I was talking to Andrew Henderson, their coach, before the game and he asked what I thought.

“I said, semi tongue-in-cheek, that we were going to crush them, and we did.”

Meanwhile, the future of Town’s dual-registration agreement with Wigan Warriors has been thrown into doubt by the announcement that some Super League teams are to form a reserve league in 2016.

Wigan Warriors, who have partnered with Workington for the last two years, look set to help form a reserve league.

Wigan head coach Shaun Wane is keen to see the introduction of a reserve league.

“We’re way down the line with that and we’re talking to clubs about fixing our own games up for next year,” he said.

“I know they’re having meetings. It’s high on the agenda in an attempt to put things in place and make sure that we get a game for everybody at our club.”
