Workington Town’s Jason Mossop says there is no reason to panic after his side’s season opening 42-12 defeat to Sheffield Eagles.

Mark Aston’s full-timers picked up both points on offer at Zebra Claims Stadium on Sunday afternoon but Mossop says that now is the time for Town to kick on ahead of Sunday’s fixture at Dewsbury Rams.

“I don’t think the scoreline reflected the game on Sunday,” the Town centre said.

“They didn’t really have to work for the tries they got and they scored off the backs of our errors.

“The effort from our lads was there for 80 minutes and we know there were some opportunities there that we wasted.

“When you can identify the errors you’ve made it makes it easier when you work to improve on them.

“It’s only the first game of the season, there’s no reason to panic at all.

“There are another 29 games to go.

“Individuals will have made mistakes in the game, I’ll have made mistakes.

“They’ll be pointed out in training but you can’t take it personally. It’s about all of us working together to help the team improve.

“We can’t be putting pressure on ourselves.”

Although Town are missing a number of players through injury, Mossop insists that can’t be used as an excuse.

“We do have a lot of injuries but we can’t use that as an excuse,” he continued.

“When those lads come back from injury it’ll be great for the team but the players that came in are quality players.

“I think we had a strong enough team to get a result.”
