Workington Town chief Mark Fryer has said the club is now targeting fourth spot as it prepares to enter the inaugural Super 8s competition.

Town, who finished eighth in the Championship table, and with it picked up what could be a crucial fourth home game, welcome Batley Bulldogs to the Zebra Claims Stadium for the first game of the Championship Shield series which will be held on Sunday, August 9.

Town are yet to pick up a win over John Kear’s side this year and will be hoping to start their Super 8s campaign with a bang as they look for a place in the Championship Shield playoffs.

Vice-chairman Fryer said: “We said we would be targeting eighth place which meant eight games at home and three away.

“The next target for the club is to finish in that fourth position. We have got to maintain and stay in that fourth position.

“There are some absolutely superb games. Everybody is fighting for that fourth spot. They are evenly matched sides.

“To get that fourth home game it errs in our favour.

“It’s superb for all the fans and sponsors who have followed us into the Super 8s.”
