Workington Town have made a double swoop to ensure two of last season’s leading stars remain with the club.

Top try scorer Joe Hambley and the coaches’ player of the year Perry Singleton have both committed to return to Derwent Park this week.

The duo have further signalled their intent putting pen to paper on two-year deals with Workington.

Chairman Garry Mounsey said he was delighted to have kept the two talented Cumbrians in their squad.

“We are delighted to sign Joe and Perry on two-year deals,” said Mounsey. “Joe was our top scorer last season and one of the highest try scorers in the league.

“He is improving all the time and was one of our targets for re-signing early.”

He added: “Perry has had a fantastic season, he is versatile in terms of position and superb in attack and defence.

“Both players have a superb attitude and train hard. We look forward to seeing them in action over the next two seasons.”

Town are currently in the process of sifting through the applicants for their vacant coaching position.

The deadline for applications was Monday, with 17 being received from the UK and beyond. The board then met to draw up a shortlist for the interview process.

They are hopeful of being able to announce a new coach by next week but reassure fans that they have not been resting on their laurels.

“We are in the process of appointing a new coach and have made several signings and re-signings which are yet to be announced,” added Mounsey.

“We are assembling a quality squad that the coach will put his final stamp on but we are really happy with where we are.”
