Workington Town’s star half-back Jarrod Sammut has reminded his team-mates that they still have a job to do when they return to action in the Super 8s next weekend against Batley Bulldogs.

Town have been given this week off by head coach Phil Veivers as an opportunity to take some time away from the game ahead of returning to training next week.

Sammut and his team-mates are fourth in the Super 8s table after a run of three consecutive wins and the Maltese international is confident that Town can take that self-belief into the next seven weeks in the race for a place in the Championship Shield.

“This week is a reward for the guys for their hard work but there’s been a big responsibility that they’ve not partied too hard as we prepare for an important few weeks,” he said.

“We’ve got a job to do when we get back but this is an opportunity for us to enjoy our time off, let injuries settle down and spend some time with our families.

“Everybody at the club is enjoying themselves at the moment and it’s showing on the field.

“We finished the season on a good note with cementing the four home games and it’s a big boost when you come to the back end of the year in-form and with some confidence after winning.”

Town will face Hunslet in round two of the Super 8s and Sammut said he was pleased with how the side responded to going 6-0 down in the first five minutes of last weekend’s game against the Hawks.

The half-back kick-started Town’s revival with an 80-metre interception try and an assist for Elliott Miller who scored in the corner.

“Going into the game we may have underestimated them a little bit and we didn’t start how we would have liked,” he admitted.

“It was a good wake up call for us after going behind early but we said behind the sticks it was an 80 minute game and anything could happen.

“We knew as long as we got back into the grind and the arm wrestle of the game we knew they would crumble before us.

“I got a bit lucky with the interception and then on the back of that Elliott got another try, that’s another thing we’ve been working on in training and it’s coming off for us.

“It’s a big confidence boost for the team and the boys are aiming up for one another.

“We’ve really stepped up defensively and we want to take that into the Super 8s and push ourselves forward.”
