In-form Workington Town prop Stevie Scholey says the performance at Barrow has upped the standard for Good Friday's derby clash with Haven.

Scholey says Town's performance at Barrow was 100 per cent better than the previous week when they slipped up against Gloucestershire All Golds.

And he says that has boosted confidence in camp ahead of Friday's visit of Whitehaven to Derwent Park, ko 3pm.

"I thought it was brilliant at Barrow, miles better than we were the week before," admitted Scholey.

"Everyone knew that we had to be 100 per cent better than last week so we went into the game with a better attitude.

"It was a tough game and Barrow were good, they threw a lot at us but we held them off and in the second half we scored two quick tries.

"Unfortunately we just couldn't get over again after that but it has set a platform ahead of Good Friday's game."

Scholey, a former Maryport amateur, said everyone was keen to collect the League 1 points as well as turn over their rivals on Friday.

"It is never hard to get fired up for a local derby, everybody will be buzzing at training," he added.

"We need to perform in the league more than any other games really. We need that result.

"Haven will be a different side from the one we faced earlier on in the year as they were struggling at the start as well.

"But they are coming in on the back of a good few fixtures so it will be a difficult game but one hopefully that we can come out on top of."

Scholey has come in for praise this season for consistently good performances and he is delighted with his own progress.

He added: "I think I have come on in leaps and bounds since last season.

"And part of that comes form getting more of a chance and a run in the team which helps confidence and you are always out to keep your shirt."

And he says the team are also starting to gel.

He said: "It is starting to come together. It was always going to be hard at the start because we hardly had anyone signed on at first and with the amount of new lads it is hard.

"But give us a few weeks and we will be even better than we have been."
