Workington Town prop Stevie Scholey admitted confidence was high in the camp after snatching back the Ike Southward Memorial Trophy from rivals Whitehaven.

Town won the derby 32-16 to lift the trophy, in memory of one of their greatest players, and also claim the first bragging rights of the season.

But Scholey also warned that they would not be getting carried away as the two sides will meet again in the iPro Sports League 1 Cup a week on Sunday.

"It is always great to get a derby win especially as I'm a local lad," said the 27-year-old former Maryport amateur.

"It felt really good to get the bragging rights and we have got plenty of confidence from the win.

"But we can't take Haven for granted in the next match because they will be gunning for us.

"They will want victory and revenge back on us so now we have to knuckle back down in training and treat this next game as if it were the first one.

"The last thing we need to do is go in with the attitude that we have won one so it would be easy as we know it won't be."

Scholey came in from praise from his coach Dave Clark, after a storming performance in the derby at Derwent Park.

Clark was delighted with the showing from Scholey and another former local amateur Tom Curwen.

"In that first stint Stevie especially stood out," said Clark. "He's improved every week and I know he works hard outside the training regime that we've got.

"He does a lot of extra work and you can see that in his game. He put 25 minutes in in that first half.

"Tom Curwen's first stint was excellent as well. Those type of players are really excelling in this environment and it's helping us a lot to continue with our desire this year in the competition."

Scholey admitted he was feeling good about his own form, and put it down to a rigorous pre-season regime under new boss Clark.

"It has been a really, really tough pre-season but everyone has took to it well," he explained. "I feel like it has pushed me on even more."

And the addition of experienced stars like hooker Stuart Howarth and prop Phil Joseph is an added bonus said the former BARLA international.

"These lads are the ones that can push you around the park and we just seem to be improving each week.

"I just want to keep improving as a player as I have done each season and see the team improve."
