Workington Town duo Brett Carter and Callum Phillips have been selected for Scotland’s training squad ahead of this year’s European Championships.

Phillips was ever-present in the Bravehearts side last season as Scotland went on to win the competition to book their place in next year’s Four Nations.

Carter missed out after being sidelined with injury but his recent form in the Super 8s could see him return to international duty in head coach Steve McCormack’s side.

“They are good players on the pitch and they are also good lads off the field as well,” McCormack said.

“Brett was unlucky to miss out last year through injury but I’m well aware of how well he can play and he has never let us down.

“He’s been a bit frustrated with dual-registration this year but that’s the nature of the game, you have to deal with the ups and downs.

“Callum is an exciting player and he will get better and better as the years go by.”

Phillips made his Scotland debut in 2013 and has made four appearances, scoring two tries.

Carter has earned six caps, scoring twice and making three of those appearances during the World Cup in 2013.

Town pair Brett Phillips and Alex Szostak miss out through injury but the elder Phillips brother could be added to the squad next week after finding out the results of a scan.

“After our training camp we will cut the squad down to 20 for the Championships,” McCormack continued.

“These are a big couple of years for us with the Four Nations next year and the World Cup the year after that.

“We see this as a three-year project and we have a group of tried and tested players and a lot of young lads too.

“Not many players get the opportunity to play in a Four Nations or a World Cup so we can’t have anybody in their comfort zone over the next few years.”
