Talented cross-code amateur Scott Rooke is the latest player to wing in to Derwent Park.

Workington Town have snapped up the 22-year-old full-back/winger after he impressed during pre-season training.

After spells with Workington Zebras and Aspatria in rugby union and both Seaton and Hensingham, playing rugby league, the youngster feels now is the right time to make the step up.

And he will make his debut in this afternoon's opening friendly against Widnes Under-19s at Derwent Park, ko 3pm.

"Workington is my hometown club and I’ve always wanted to sign," said Rooke.

"I want to be part of the development that's going on at the club for the coming season and into the future.

"I can’t wait to wear the shirt and get out on the pitch with some of the players I’ve been watching over the last few seasons and the new players that have come in.

"I’ll feel immensely proud to wear the Workington Town badge and will always give everything for the team."

Rooke hit the headlines last season when he broke two records in Workington Zebras' win over Windermere.

He became the first player at the club to ever score six tries in one game and also broke his own marker for most points in a game, finishing with 46.

And after representing his county in both codes and playing for England Colleges, Rooke has a pedigree that impressed Town head coach Dave Clark.

The Town boss believes Rooke has a lot to offer as they prepare for the 2017 League 1 season.

"Scott has gone very well in pre-season and impressed the coaching staff enough to earn a contract," said Clark.

"He is fast, strong and knows where the try line is. He’s still young and I’m looking forward to seeing him develop as a professional rugby player.

"I’m sure his versatility will be a big plus for the team over the course of the season."
